Users Stopping Anti-Obesity Medications Gain Back Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

New research reveals that patients who discontinue new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who end conventional diet and exercise programs.

Research printed in a prominent medical journal shows that while overweight individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"People using such drugs need to be cognizant of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain means a return to original mass in about a year and a half.

Comparing Approaches

The study, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Researchers point out that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally have a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Explaining the Fast Regain

Nutrition scientists believe the mode of action of the jabs accounts for the heightened regain.

GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Stopping of this medication leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Issue?

The NHS suggest the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Professionals say that, given the high risk of relapse, the therapy is often ongoing.

This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "emphasize the long-term character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Accounts

Individuals who have discontinued the jabs describe a intense return of appetite.

"It was like a switch activating and you're instantly starving," described a patient.

This challenge is worsened if users have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Growing Interest

Figures indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.

  • Adoption is more common among females than males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, clinicians stress that while the jabs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing lifestyle changes.
