On Monday evening, an extensive campaign to track down, intimidate, and target people viewed as celebrating the death of conservative activist the political figure was endorsed by JD Vance.

During a guest appearance on Kirk’s podcast, the Vice-President declared that those who “see someone celebrating Charlie’s assassination” should publicly identify them”. Vance went on to say: “In fact, call their employer. We are opposed in violent tactics, but we do believe in respect, and there is no civility in the celebration of political assassination.”

In the past week, multiple employees across various industries—including college staff to an airline pilot—were terminated due to their comments about the commentator’s killing.

A nameless website that began gathering reports of anti-Kirk rhetoric claimed it had obtained more than sixty-three thousand reports. Originally named “Reveal Kirk’s Critics”, the site rebranded on Monday to the “Kirk Memorial Initiative”.

Allies of former President Trump have sought to link the assassination—absent proof—to what they describe as a coordinated progressive “extremist” network that supports targeted attacks. This has sparked concerns of a draconian response on expression.

On the show, the Vice-President stated that the government would “aim to break down the organizations that promote violence and extremism in our own country”.

Joining Vance on the program was Trump’s deputy chief of staff, who pledged to take action on what he called a “vast homegrown extremist network” he held responsible for the killing.

“I solemnly swear,” he stated, “we are going to use every resource at the DOJ, DHS, and across this government to locate, undermine, dismantle, and eliminate these networks.”

Ideological affiliations of the assailant remain unclear, and the US has experienced a wave of attacks in recent years that has affected both Democrats and conservatives.

However, the dragnet has also affected those who expressed criticism of the deceased commentator, a religious conservative with a history of sexist and racist speeches. Some have simply quoted the commentator’s statements or been targeted for failing to grieve his death.

An example of a individual affected was military officer a service member, who quoted the commentator on the date of his assassination. Among the quotes were his labeling the landmark legislation as a “monster” that “became an anti-white tool”, and his assertion that some firearm fatalities are the cost of the right to bear arms.

Republican-controlled governments such as the Sunshine State, the Sooner State, and the Lone Star State have initiated investigations into educators alleged of making offensive statements after last week’s killing. Additionally, the US military has invited citizens to report those who “celebrate or mock” the killing, and confirmed that some troops have faced dismissal for their statements.

Calls for a strong response by Vance and additional Trump allies have evoked recollections of some of the most troubling periods in American the past.

“The government involvement in this does inch it nearer to looking like the Red Scare,” said a free speech advocate of the free speech organization, referring to the historical effort to eliminate leftists that resulted in false allegations and ruined careers. “That was hardly a shining era for open discourse.”

Democrats have also been victims of political violence in recent times, including the June assassination of a Minnesota elected official and her husband, and the 2022 beating of ex-congresswoman Nancy Pelosi’s partner in their California home.
