The Retail Giant Pins Hopes on Ladies' Apparel to Revive Fall Performance

After a online intrusion disrupted its summer operations, the retailer is banking on apparel to boost its seasonal prospects.

A designer-inspired, crystal-embellished, dark gray V-neck knit (costing £46), a synthetic trenchcoat with a cost of £90 – far lower than comparable high-end alternatives – and a £36 short creased skirt inspired by popular looks are expected to debut in shops soon.

“We can be more daring because while we persist in lead among older demographic, we’ve gained new buyers in the 35- to 55-year-old demographic,” said a company representative.

The store is relying on womenswear, which has experienced rising revenue and standing during the previous couple of years, to drive a turnaround in the aftermath of a devastating cyber-attack that affected activities over multiple months and reportedly resulted in significant revenue declines.

The goal is to ensure that if a shopper enters a location, ‘a large portion of the products are previously unseen to her’. The other segment includes core products – like classic tops, skinny jeans, timeless trousers, and similar articles that stay perennially in stock.

The company carefully reviews styles for everyday use, making sure that even daring garments are accessible. The resurgence of the short skirt, for example, is reflected in the collection, but consistently in designs that are flattering and practical.

Understanding which trends to ignore is just as critical as knowing those that to incorporate. The focus is on subtler tones – like blush, deep red, and neutral – which are seen as more flattering and adaptable, rather than harsher hues that can be less user-friendly to style.

Leather features prominently on coats, dresses, skirts, and footwear. Earlier this year, the retailer enjoyed a significant hit with budget-friendly loafers, selling tens of thousands of units and leveraging the popular appeal for versatile options. Investment in this category has been increased noticeably for the coming period.

In denim, high-waisted designs still prevail, with price remaining a critical factor. Although lower-priced alternatives are vital, there is rising scope for somewhat higher values when the product deserves it.

To enable more responsive responses to consumer needs, the retailer has substantially shifted manufacturing from remote locations to more local manufacturing in nearby nations, shortening production cycles and enhancing responsiveness.
