Meteorologists are saying a frosty commencement to the new year, with snow anticipated across much of the UK. Revelers are advised to dress warmly as near-freezing temperatures are expected for New Year's Eve.
Celebratory Events Continue Amid Forecasts
The Scottish capital's famous Hogmanay celebrations are set to proceed, a contrast to last year's postponement. This is in spite of weather alerts for snow across northern Scotland.
"A cold New Year's Eve night for those out celebrating, so additional clothing will be needed," said the Met Office.
Celebrations Under Open but Chilly Skies
Elsewhere in the UK, the weather is set to be ideal for fireworks celebrations, with a lack of precipitation and good visibility. Temperatures are forecast to be chilly, making additional clothing a necessity, as per forecasters.
In more northern areas, conditions will be cloudier, but this is not expected to impact visibility for watching fireworks. "We are not looking at low cloud, mist or murk, so you will likely be able to see fireworks, just not stars," commented one forecaster.
Extensive Weather Alerts for New Year's Day
Heading into Friday, weather warnings have been issued across Northern Ireland and from Wales, over the north-west, the West Midlands and all the way to London and most of the south-east of England.

- Disruptions and cancellations are expected on the transport network.
Temperatures Expected to Fall Further
Going into the new year, it will be "chilly no matter where you are," said forecaster Simon Partridge. The weather are set to drop further as snow and gale-force winds are expected to affect the north of the country.
Around 10cm of snow is forecast to have built up in some areas by Friday morning, with up to 30cm on the most elevated routes and peaks.
Public Health Warnings Issued
In addition, amber cold health alerts are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to stay active until noon on 5 January, with the mercury expected to fall to between 3C and 5C.
The health agency explained this signified the weather was likely to lead to major effects across medical and care provision. This encompasses a potential rise in the number of deaths among vulnerable individuals or those in the older age groups.
