Educational institutions in northern Nigeria have repeatedly come under attack for weapon-wielding factions

Weapon-carrying attackers have taken the life of an instructor and kidnapped no fewer than 25 pupils in an attack on a female high school in the northwestern part of Nigeria, according to police.

The criminal group invaded the comprehensive secondary school for girls in the Maga locality within Kebbi State at roughly 4 in the morning local time on the start of the week, officials stated.

The armed individuals "exchanged fire with security forces on duty in a firefight" before climbing over the boundary wall and seizing the students from their dormitory, authorities disclosed.

A school employee was killed while trying to protect the students. A second sustained gunshot wounds and is now receiving treatment.

Observers recounted a considerable contingent of armed individuals, identified in the area as outlaw groups, who came shooting randomly to create fear.

Community members told reporters that the armed men then led a number of girls into adjacent wilderness.

The police said they had deployed "supplementary tactical squads, together with army members and local protection units" to the area.

A coordinated search and rescue operation is currently ongoing in nearby woodlands and believed flight corridors.

In recent years, educational institutions in Nigeria's north have regularly come under attack for armed groups, who routinely perform seizures to request monetary settlements or gain negotiating power with authorities.

The incident in Kebbi State underscores the continuing safety emergency troubling the locality, resulting in households in Maga in a situation of anxious fatigue as they expect and desire their children's secure homecoming.

Security crisis in northern Nigeria has intensified significantly in the past few months, with educational institutions bearing the brunt of the violence.
