German Liberty ‘At Risk’ States Merz as He Cautions Against ‘Dictated Peace’ in the Eastern European Nation
Opening the discussion in the German parliament, Leader Friedrich Merz set out the stakes this autumn, declaring that Germany faces decisions “concerning core principles rather than minor aspects” that will shape its destiny.
“We must take a sober look at the current situation in order to select the right path for our country,” he remarked.
He stressed that “national liberty is under threat” with a increasing “feeling of vulnerability,” adding that the country’s economic model is also “strained” from “an emerging trend in protectionism.”
Additionally, he cautioned against “factions at home and abroad” that challenge social cohesion and undermine the nation’s democratic foundations.
On defense matters, he began by noting that the Moscow’s aggression of Ukraine “has a very concrete impact on our lives,” and asserted: “We want this war to end.”
But he conceded that “there is reason to fear it will continue for some time.”
The chancellor emphasized that “concluding the conflict at the expense of Ukraine’s independence and borders is out of the question,” and alerted that “an imposed resolution” could “only encourage Putin to seek his subsequent goal.”
He then censured recent Russian drone incursions into the Polish territory and Romania.
“Putin has long been testing the limits,” he said, but stressed:
We will not allow this.
‘National Defense Readiness Is Essential’, Merz Says
The leader repeated his regular line on national security, asserting:
We want to be able to defend ourselves so that we do not have to defend ourselves.
But he also made a wider argument about the necessity of updating the nation, its civil protection plans, and the military.
He also addressed trade, including looking for new partners “in an increasingly complex world.”
He said that “the distinction between internal and external affairs is simply outdated,” as the state’s initiatives abroad “help maintain liberty, stability and prosperity at home.”
He also mentioned advancements on his administration’s goal to lower the number of refugee requests in response to growing migratory pressures.
