This Supernatural Story
Soderbergh challenges his creative boundaries with this innovative ghostly tale captured wholly from the viewpoint of a ghost. When a household including mother Rebekah and her distressed teen Chloe settles into their new suburban house, the lens – as the unseen entity – tracks their movements. The daughter appears sensing the supernatural presence, and it seems guarding her. However, the motive remains? This is an entertaining concept that remains concise, featuring a surprise that could catch you off guard. October 11th, multiple showings, Sky Cinema
The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent
The iconic actor wholeheartedly adopts his eccentric image in this meta comedy caper. He portrays a narcissistic Hollywood actor playing himself who takes on a million-dollar gig to visit a celebration in Mallorca for the wealthy superfan Javi. Contacted by the intelligence agency to spy on the alleged criminal, Cage's “nouveau shamanic acting ability” proves useful. October 11th, prime time, Channel 4
The Black Phone
The director's contained scarefest holds up well without requiring a follow-up. Located in the late 70s in Denver, multiple kidnappings has rendered the local kids frightened. When Finney gets captured by the villain and locked up in a cellar, he fears a terrible outcome. Yet the non-functional line on the wall continues to ring, with ghostly voices giving advice, as the prophetic visions of his sister Gwen may be his salvation. A solid creepfest. Saturday 11 October, 10.50pm, on Film4
The Tammy Faye Biopic
In the struggle between faith and wealth, it's a knockout win for materialism in Showalter's delightfully tacky film adaptation about the fallen televangelist plus her lawbreaking partner. Andrew Garfield portrays the corrupt Bakker, who states early on, claiming divine approval for wealth. The couple commence monetising the American public's Christian beliefs. It's an extravaganza of bad interior design, bad makeup and insincerity, yet the lead actress succeeds to show the real-life figure with compassion. October 14th, 1.15am, on Film4
The Spy Mystery
This week's another release by the same director delivers a espionage tale as sharp like the turtlenecks sported by Michael Fassbender's British agent. The two stars excel of deadpan cool, so a delicious mind game of deception or honesty takes place. Tom Burke, Regé-Jean Page, Naomie Harris and Marisa Abela take part the smart espionage amusement. This Friday, various showings, Sky Cinema Premiere
