FBI Director Wears LFC Necktie at Congressional Session
FBI Director Kash Patel appeared in front of the US Senate judiciary committee on Tuesday sporting a tie featuring the emblem of EPL team Liverpool.

The choice of neckwear drew questions on social media. For one thing, it is extremely rare for a government official to sport a necktie featuring the insignia of a business or sports team. For another, Patel has not publicly expressed support for Liverpool in the past—at least not in words.
That said, he has been pictured wearing Liverpool ties on no fewer than two distinct occasions. One occasion was on 12 December 2024, when Patel was visiting lawmakers on Capitol Hill following Donald Trump’s election victory. Back then, he was rumored to be joining the government. Another instance occurred roughly five months later, on 9 April 2025, at a media briefing highlighting the arrest of drug traffickers by US law enforcement.
A Collection
Interestingly, the necktie used on Tuesday was different from the earlier one. The earlier design had thick stripes and a subtle logo, while the newer tie featured narrower bands and a larger logo—identified as the classic design.
His apparent possesses several Liverpool ties implies that his choice is not a fluke.
Contentious Proceedings
At Tuesday’s session, the mood became contentious on multiple occasions. Patel had a loud argument with US senators Cory Booker and Adam Schiff. He stood by his leadership of the FBI, his firing of longtime employees involved in investigations concerning the January 6 events, and a social media post in which he declared that a suspect was in custody for the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk—a statement that proved inaccurate.
“I don’t see it as a mistake,” Patel told the committee. “I view it as cooperating with the people to identify that there was a subject in detention.”
Ideological Divide
Should Patel actually follow Liverpool, it would represent a sharp contrast of political loyalties. Being among the US’s foremost law enforcement officers, Patel has been a visible representative of a Trump’s renewed presidency that has used authoritarian tactics to impact multiple areas of society.
These involve operations by Immigration and Customs Enforcement in open areas that have resulted in the arrest of many of foreign nationals regardless of their legal status or nationality. It also includes the dispatching of government officers to liberal US cities in due to alleged higher offense levels—claims that have been disproven.
The Club’s Identity
Liverpool, on the other hand, is known to be among the more progressive teams in Europe, from one of the most liberal cities in the UK.
Famous Liverpool manager Bill Shankly once said: “I am convinced the only way to live and to be truly successful is by teamwork, with everyone working for each other, everyone helping each other, and everyone having a portion of the rewards at the end of the day.”
Though the business of Liverpool have changed in recent times, traces of collectivist thinking remain. Former head coach Jürgen Klopp, who guided the club to great success from 2015 to 2024, described his own politics by remarking: “When I succeed, I want others to do well, too. If there’s something I will never do in my life is vote for the right.”
Historical Strains
Liverpool’s fans also have a considerable history of opposition toward law enforcement. Much of this originates in the Hillsborough tragedy of 1989, which killed 97 Liverpool fans. Initially, police accused the crowd of hooliganism and intoxication. Subsequently, independent inquiries found that the crowd crush was due to serious failures by authorities, who had misled the people to shift responsibility.

Patel gained attention after the events of 6 January 2021, when he supported a legal defense fund for those detained in connection with the Capitol attack. A career prosecutor and advisor to conservative figures, Patel leveraged his association with the previous Trump government to pursue commercial projects and a career in broadcasting. In both capacities, he promoted several conspiracy theories, including discredited assertions of election fraud and misleading statements about Covid-19 vaccines.
