The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States against five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been central to efforts to enact laws governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
