Donald Trump Touches Down in UK for Second State Visit Amid Protests Gather in Windsor
Donald Trump has landed in the UK preceding what marks his second state visit, an event labeled as unprecedented in modern diplomatic relations.
The president and First Lady Melania Trump touched down Tuesday night at Stansted Airport on Air Force One. Their itinerary features events over the coming 48 hours, such as being hosted by King Charles, military parades, and a potential flypast by the Red Arrows together with British and American F-35 fighter aircraft.
Protests Erupt Against Trump’s Policies and Rhetoric
The visit has triggered criticism from various quarters in the UK, with the anti-Trump alliance holding a protest in Windsor on Tuesday and scheduling a further rally in central London on Wednesday.
One prominent figure claimed the US president of fueling the flames of polarizing, radical politics around the globe in recent years.
The same individual stated that Trump’s use of the military in US cities and targeting of minorities echoed tactics straight out of the authoritarian’s handbook.
He emphasized that while maintaining good relations with the US is pragmatic, the UK should not hesitate to criticize a leader who advances divisive policies.
Official Greeting and Protest Scenes
After landing, Donald and Melania Trump were greeted by American diplomatic representatives and a British lord-in-waiting on behalf of the monarch. Yvette Cooper was among those present to meet the president.
The first couple then boarded Marine One, the presidential helicopter, which took off shortly after their arrival. They were scheduled to travel to the US ambassador’s residence in a central London location.
Meanwhile, around 70 protesters assembled near Windsor Castle, holding signs and shouting slogans such as “Trump out” and “Donald Trump not welcome here”.
A protester commented, “We need to demonstrate that we oppose what is occurring in the world at present.”
A different attendee voiced dismay at the UK leadership’s decision to offer such a warm welcome, describing it as “repulsive” and questioning whether Trump deserved such unprecedented treatment.
Royal Events and Armed Forces Participation
The royal couple are scheduled to greet the Trumps with a formal reception at Windsor Castle, including artillery honors discharged simultaneously in Windsor and at the Tower of London.
UK defense authorities confirmed that this would be the biggest guard of honour ever presented during a state visit, with about 1,300 armed forces members and 120 horses taking part.
The occasion will also include a horse-drawn parade to the castle, accompanied by the royal mounted regiment, and a Beating Retreat ceremony—a debut such an act has been performed for a state visit.
A lavish state banquet will feature performances by several musical groups, such as the a royal musical unit and pipers from the a historic regiment.
Divided Opinions and Future Engagements
While many demonstrated, some showed support for the US president’s visit. One supporter remarked that Trump’s presence could assist in brokering global stability and reinforcing international alliances.
Another local said that while staying away from demonstrations, they believed the public dissent reflected the opinions of the most in the UK, stating that the state visit seemed intended to appease Trump rather than reflect public sentiment.
Trump is scheduled to travel to the official retreat of the UK prime minister on Thursday, with RAF personnel lining the route upon his arrival.
