Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Remarks

England opening batter Zak Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of statements made by skipper Stokes regarding the dressing room as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder delivered this message in several conversations in the wake of his team's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series versus Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where England are staring at a series loss with a match to spare, Stokes noted he had let his sentiment to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," said the England leader.

But, after the opener made 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take anything stated in the press with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "weak men" comment subsequent to his side suffered a loss in the second Test to go 2-0 down.

The team afterwards went on a holiday to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and third Tests.

Before the Adelaide contest, he revealed his players had held "honest" talks and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to remain alive in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman asserted the guidance from Stokes and coach McCullum had stayed consistent with their prior three years in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, the same as always," noted the opener. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we could do an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday came during a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia spinner Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England 207-6 chasing a daunting total of 435.

This means, the home team require just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to secure an unassailable 3-0 advantage after three Tests.

A loss will extend the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth successive away Ashes loss.

This series will be completed in only eleven days of cricket – after England fell the first two Tests in rapid time each.

Not since 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the modern era.

"It's disappointing," said Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel at this point."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we will definitely view it like that," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. Australia is a very, very good team. It was inevitably hard coming here against them. They entered as the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Place In Question

Although Crawley's innings in Adelaide probably answers questions about his immediate future in the side, Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 in the team's second innings on Saturday, adding to his poor record against the old enemy.

Across 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has failed to score a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other England player since 1900 – Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

But, the opener said any notion Pope is under the microscope comes from "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," added he. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has played some really good knocks. It is noise externally. There is no chat of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," he concluded.
